The second issue of the ISLANDS Newsletter is now available, offering readers a snapshot of the vibrant activity taking place within the project during the first half of 2025. As the doctoral network continues to expand and take shape, this edition highlights not only the scientific progress being made, but also the growing sense of community among the researchers and institutions involved.
Among the key stories featured is the successful launch of the first two ISLANDS Doctoral Schools, held in Cassino, Italy. Over two intensive weeks, doctoral candidates engaged in expert-led sessions on 6G technologies, integrated sensing and communications (ISAC), wireless systems, and research communication skills. The schools also included online modules, enhancing accessibility and reinforcing the project’s commitment to inclusive, high-quality training.
The newsletter also covers the Mid-Term Check Meeting held in Brussels in June 2025—an important milestone that brought together, for the first time in person, all doctoral candidates, their supervisors, and the project coordination team. The event was not only an occasion for institutional review, but also a moment to celebrate the enthusiasm, motivation, and scientific ambition of the young researchers at the heart of ISLANDS.
In addition, this issue introduces several of the doctoral candidates, sharing their academic backgrounds, research topics, and host institutions. Their profiles reflect the diversity and interdisciplinary nature of the network, and the range of expertise driving the project forward.
Finally, the newsletter highlights the first dissemination activities carried out by the network, including the submission of a joint publication on radar signal processing for ISAC systems.
As the project moves into its second year, the energy and engagement of the ISLANDS community are clearly visible. The newsletter offers a glimpse into this dynamic environment—and a preview of what’s to come.
