The University of California, San Diego is a student-centered, research-focused, service-oriented public institution. The unit that participates in ISLANDS is based in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department in the Irwin and Joan Jacobs School of Engineering. This School is currently home to six distinct engineering departments, offering eighteen undergraduate majors, sixteen master’s degrees, and twelve Ph.D. programs. The Jacobs School of Engineering is the youngest engineering school of the nation’s top ten, the largest by enrollment in the University of California system, as well as the largest engineering school on the West Coast. The ECE Department in particular is home to over 60 faculty, 900 graduate students, and 1300 undergraduate students who span a range of research areas in communication theory and systems, computer engineering, electronic circuits and systems, electronic devices and materials, machine learning and control, photonics, and signal and image processing.
