Strengthening Responsible Research: ISLANDS Launches Ethics and Research Integrity Course

The ISLANDS Doctoral Network is pleased to announce the launch of a new training course on Ethics and Research Integrity, a key component of its commitment to fostering responsible research practices and strengthening the professional development of its doctoral candidates.

The course, delivered by James Parry, will take place over four sessions starting on 27 April 2026. This training offers participants a valuable opportunity to engage with one of the leading experts in the field of research integrity and research culture.

With nearly two decades of experience, James Parry brings a wealth of expertise in supporting researchers and institutions to enhance the quality, transparency, and ethical standards of their work. Formerly the long-standing leader of the UK Research Integrity Office, he has played a pivotal role in shaping both national and international policies on research integrity, and continues to advise organisations, funders, and publishers on complex and high-profile issues related to responsible research.

The course is designed to provide a comprehensive and practical understanding of ethical research practices. Through a combination of interactive lectures, case studies, and group discussions, participants will explore core topics such as research integrity, research quality, and ethical decision-making. Particular attention will be given to addressing challenges such as authorship and publication ethics, the responsible use of artificial intelligence in research, and how to respond to errors, questionable practices, and research misconduct.

In addition, the training will examine the broader research environment, highlighting how research culture, institutional systems, and external requirements can influence both research quality and researcher behaviour. Participants will be encouraged to reflect on their own research contexts and to develop strategies for promoting a positive and integrity-driven research culture.

By combining expert insight with practical application, this course aims to equip ISLANDS doctoral candidates with the tools and awareness needed to navigate the ethical dimensions of their research careers and to contribute to a more responsible and trustworthy research ecosystem.

This initiative represents another important step in the ISLANDS project’s ongoing efforts to deliver high-quality, forward-looking training that prepares early-stage researchers for the complex challenges of contemporary research and innovation.
